Lilly started off the game a little shaky but settled down very quickly. The 2nd batter of the game, Miguel Tejada, homered into the Dodger bullpen in left field. Adrian Gonzalez followed with a single on the very next pitch.
San Diego Padres couldn’t do anything against Lilly. He retired 20 batters in a row while pitching 7 innings with 5 strikeouts.
Russell Martin sparked the offense just enough to give Lilly the run support he needed to win this game. With 2 runners on base, Martin hit a line drive to center field and Chris Denorfia made a diving attempt but came up empty. The ball rolled to the wall, allowing Matt Kemp and Casey Blake to score. Later in the inning, Denorfia threw out Martin at the plate with an amazing one hop to Nick Hundley.
Hong-Chih Kuo pitched another scoreless inning while walking one batter and striking out another. Jonathan Broxton gave up a lead-off single to Jerry Hairston Jr. and intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez. The walk lead to a game ending double play off the bat of Ryan Ludwick.
Lilly earned his 1st victory with his old ball club, that drafted him 14 years earlier. Kuo received his 16th hold and Broxton earned his 21st save of the season. This snaps the Dodgers 6 game losing streak and puts them back into a tie with the Colorado Rockies for 3rd place.
Only 8 games back with 2 more games against the first place Padres. Back to work tomorrow night.
