A day when the pitching wasn’t spectacular, the offense picked up the slack. The Dodgers were 1-9 on the road since the all-star break.
The Dodgers finally made a smart move this season.
The other day Garret Anderson was designated for assignment and they called-up Jay Gibbons.
In Gibbons first Major League at-bat since 2007, he singled up the middle for a single also driving in a run. Helping the Dodgers extend their win streak to 2 games on Sunday.
Joe Torre decided to give Matt Kemp the day off in the opening game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Jay Gibbons was inserted into the lineup batting 6th and playing left field.
Gibbons singled to right field in his first two at-bats scoring Ethier from third base in his second at-bat. In the top of the 4th inning, the Phillies finally retired Gibbons by striking him out.
The Phillies quickly responded to the Dodgers 7 run lead and cut the deficit to 3 runs.
In the top of the 6th inning, Gibbons comes up to the plate and smashes his first homerun as a Dodger. It was a 2 run shot giving the Dodgers an 11-4 lead.
Torre gave Gibbons the rest of the night off.
Dodgers beat the Phillies 15-9 and extend their win streak to 3.
I’ll be watching the Giants & Padres tonight as their games just got underway. Dodgers will face Roy Oswalt tomorrow night and Chad Billingsley will be on the mound for the boys in blue.
Other Notes:
Andre Ethier reached base 6 times. Going 4 for 4 with 3 singles, Double, Hit By Double and Walk.
George Sherill walked in his 1st MLB plate appearance.
Matt Kemp pinched hit in the 7th inning and singled with the bases loaded, scoring James Loney and Ryan Theriot. Breaking out of his 1 for 21 slump.
WP: Vicente Padilla (6-3) (Dodgers 59-54)
LP: Kyle Kendrick (7-5) (Phillies 62-50)
